The\u00a0Media Object Server<\/b>\u00a0(MOS<\/b>) protocol allows\u00a0newsroom<\/a>\u00a0computer systems (NCS) to communicate using a standard protocol with\u00a0video servers<\/a>,\u00a0audio servers<\/a>,\u00a0still stores<\/a>, and\u00a0character generators<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0broadcast<\/a>\u00a0production.<\/sup><\/sup><\/p>\n

The MOS protocol is based on\u00a0XML<\/a>.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It enables the exchange of the following types of messages:[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Descriptive Data for Media Objects.<\/dt>\n
The MOS “pushes” descriptive information and pointers to the NCS as objects are created, modified, or deleted in the MOS. This allows the NCS to be “aware” of the contents of the MOS and enables the NCS to perform searches on and manipulate the data the MOS has sent.<\/dd>\n
Playlist Exchange.<\/dt>\n
The NCS can build and transfer playlist information to the MOS. This allows the NCS to control the sequence that media objects are played or presented by the MOS.<\/dd>\n
Status Exchange.<\/dt>\n
The MOS can inform the NCS of the status of specific clips or the MOS system in general. The NCS can notify the MOS of the status of specific playlist items or running orders.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n

MOS was developed to reduce the need for the development of\u00a0device specific drivers<\/a>. By allowing developers to embed functionality and handle events, vendors were relieved of the burden of developing device drivers. It was left to the manufacturers to interface newsroom computer systems. This approach affords broadcasters flexibility to purchase equipment from multiple vendors.[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It also limits the need to have\u00a0operators<\/a>\u00a0in multiple locations throughout the studio as, for example, multiple\u00a0character generators<\/a>\u00a0(CG) can be fired from a single control\u00a0workstation<\/a>, without needing an operator at each CG console.<\/sup><\/p>\n

MOS enables\u00a0journalists<\/a>\u00a0to see, use, and control media devices inside\u00a0Associated Press<\/a>‘s\u00a0ENPS<\/a>\u00a0system so that individual pieces of newsroom\u00a0production<\/a>\u00a0technology speak a common\u00a0XML<\/a>-based language.<\/sup><\/p>\n
